  1. Hello Group seven, I am James V. from Erin McCoy’s Monday/Wednesday morning class. I am a Pre-Med major; who will be going to pharmacy school next fall. The article that we had to read was Carnival. It is about the Carnival festival in Brazil. So how neat would that be to be a participant in Brazil’s Carnival. I mean the atmosphere seems so wild and free spirited. I think this is why it in number 4 on my top 10 places I want to travel by thirty list. I think this person was really dedicated because they didn’t let anything stand in their way of having a great time at the carnival. Besides a little rain never hurt anyone right? I am including a link about the history of Brazil’s Carnival so you can catch up on its history? http://www.afropop.org/multi/feature/ID/33/. Well you all enjoy the article and can’t wait to hear some responses.

  2. Hello to my fellow Brazilian Carnival group. I am Jacqueline O. or JackieO. from Mrs.McCoys Mon./Wed. class @ 10:50. After reading the History of the Carnaval in Brazil I found that the first carnaval actually dates back to Anicent Greek Spring festival in honor of Dionysus, "The Goddess of Wine". Having these festivals actually allows for the Brazilian community to have, "one last gasp of music, food, alchol & sex before lent" "40 days of purging sins followed by a week filled with viturally every known sin". The joys of following a religion where you can re-pent...Catholic...Gotta Love It!!!!

  3. Hi Group seven, I'm Lauren H. from Erin Mcoy's monday/wedsenday 10:35 class. While my major is currently undecided,I have decided to get my associate in arts. We all had to read an article about Brazil's Carnival. This is defiantly on my list of things I want to see. It just seems so exciting and fun. There's no way you could go to that and not have fun? In the article, nothing seemed to stop them not even the rain. Brazil happens to be the birth country of the person in the article. So to me it seemed like because of the connection she has with Brazil, she was so interested and motivated to learn the samba and be apart of the carnival. I was able to find a link from youtube that shows a few videos of the carnival. Here's the link, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b-YxbcVJla0. Hope you enjoy the video and can't wait to see your responses on the article.

  4. Hey group seven; we seem to have gotten the more fun of the group assignments. I’m Anthony G in Mrs. .McCoy’s Mon. /Wed. 2:50 class. I’ve noticed that the carnival in Brazil is much like our Mardi gras, a four day long Party get ready for lent. Carnival is practiced in many other towns throughout Brazil, it’s not just found in Rio. In the link below I found a website that offers a “travelers guide” to Carnaval. It explains the tradition and customs much better that I could myself. http://www.rio-carnival.net/

  5. Great links and great comments on Carnival thus far; it is like Mardi Gras, and we all know that New Orleans wouldn't let rain stop it from throwing a great party:) Jackie's comment about the roots of the festival was very important - did you know that our Easter rabbit also comes from Roman festivals of fertility? Do you all think that there are similar festivals in Louisville at all? Would Derby qualify? What religious festivals does the US have that are similar, if any? Glad you all would like to check out the event - maybe think on it for spring break next year?:)

  6. Hey Group seven, how is everyone doing? First of all great comments and info you all have. Hey Anthony G. is really liked your site on Brazilian travel. It was very informative. I could not believe that tickets for next year’s Carnaval’s samba parade is already sold out besides tickets that go for $1,900 a person for one day. If you want a hotel during the Carnaval expect to spend over $1,000 a night. Hey Jackie O. I like the reference to the Catholic’s where we are sinful for one week then we re-pent for our sins for 40 days. Lauren H. I really liked your link. It was a great video on the Carnavl in Brazil. You got to see all the costumes and how many people really go to it. With all that I have learned from everyone’s blog comments I really can’t wait to get a taste of the Brazilian culture on April 13th.

  7. Hello Group seven! How is everyone? I think everyone did a great job with our topic. James V. I looked at the link you had and I actually learned a couple things. Like I had no idea that the origins of carnival date back to the ancient Greek spring festival in honor of Dionysus, the god of wine and the carnival in Rio is the most famous. Hey Anthony G. I really liked you site as well. It had alot of information and pictures showing the carnival. I was a little shocked by the prices though, but I think after learning about the carnival and seeing what its like on my video, its defiantly worth seeing.

  8. Hello Group seven, I hope you enjoyed reading you post and I am excited about reading more of your posts. My name is Aaron D from from Erin Mcoy's Monday/Wednesday 10:35 class. I enjoyed reading the Article about the Carnival, it makes me want to go to Brazil to see what kinda of fun it actually is. I doubt that I would be down for trying the Samba dancing but I would be down for the other party Festivities. I find pretty cool that Brazil, use to be one of the poorest countries and is now one of the wealthiest countries in the world and will host the 2014 Olympics. I think it will be a good fit for the Olympics with so much history and culture. In Brazil everybody takes part in the Carnival even famous people. Here is a pretty cool videohttp://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/southamerica/brazil/8370447/Supermodel-Gisele-star-of-Brazil-Carnival.html

  9. Hello group, my name is Derek Brown and im an undergraduate here at ole’ JCTC. After reading this article I have a better understanding of the Brazillian festival Carnival. It seems like once big party/parade where people get together and shout about their heritage and things of that nature. Carne Vale, sounds like our version of spring break in Panama City Beach. A “sexy celebration” as they put it. I saw it as like St. Patrick’s in Nola, because of the pre-lent atmosphere. What I want to know is , do they get drunk? Since it’s the sexiest celebration on earth, do they have sex a lot? Just some food for thought. I found this link on google and it is helpful by telling you whats going on for the next carnival. http://www.rio-carnival.net/. But on a lighter note I wanna get some tickets to the 2012 parade. Anyone game?
    Yours truly,

  10. Hello group seven my name is Derek Brown. After reading Anthony G’s blog. I have to agree with him on the fact that its one big party. I also posted the link of rio-carnival.net, so I knew what to expect in terms of the site. I visisted it again and this festival/parade seems like a hard celebration to find tickets to, and to get there. But nonetheless, the link was so helpful in finding info in the legitimate nature of this celebration. Jackie O. I agree this is one last hoorah of drugs and sex and indulgences before “getting serious” about their religion. I would love to be a part of a culture that accepts all this partying and embraces it as a cultural Identity, and I hope I could because it’s right up my alley lol.

  11. I’m Caryn M from Ms. McCoy’s M-W 12:00 class. Carnival sounds like so much fun. It sounds like a combination of Mardi Gras with Las Vegas showgirls. It’s something that I would like to watch but not dress up. I wouldn’t feel comfortable enough. Lol! It’s interesting to know that this is more of a religious practice rather than just something for fun. I would love to travel to Brazil! It’s a beautiful country!

  12. Hey group seven this is Kayla C from Erin McCoy's Monday/Wednesday class. The "Carne Vale" sounds a lot to me like Marti Gras in New Orleans. All the parading and dancing and bright colors remind me of marti gras. The nudity and glitter bikinis with strappy platform shoes also make me think of marti gras. They're culture doesnt seem to be much different from ours, like how she talked about all the chairs squeezed between hotdog stands and coolers full of beer. It sounds like the Carnival is a lot of fun and I would like to go someday.
